COLLEGE STATION – The Texas A&M softball team continues its fall slate with a doubleheader against McLennan Wednesday at the Aggie Softball Complex. Game one will begin at 4 p.m., while game two is scheduled for a 6 p.m. start. Admission to the games is free.
"I have been pleased with what I have seen thus far with our team," head coach Jo Evans said. "It was good to see our hitters string together some hits and runs against Blinn. I am encouraged by that. McLennan is going to be a fun team to play. They had a great season last year, advancing in their postseason. That is what we want to see. We want to play teams that expect to come in here and compete and play hard. I look forward to playing them."
The Maroon & White are coming off a sweep against Blinn on Oct. 27, defeating the Buccaneers, 11-0 and 19-1. Junior Lexi Smith tossed a no-hitter in game two, striking out 10 in five innings. In game one, freshman Payton McBride gave up one hit in seven innings of work, fanning three.
Offensively, junior Erica Russell led the way, hitting a perfect 4-for-4 with a double, triple, four runs scored and five RBI, while also drawing three walks. Junior Tori Vidales drove in five runs with a double and a triple, and freshman Sarah Hudek belted two home runs.
McLennan, who advanced to the NJCAA Division I National Championship last season, is led by sophomores Theresa Gonzales and Victoria Gonzales. Theresa was third on the team in batting average at .464 with five homeruns and a team-high 71 RBI. Victoria complemented with a .427 average, three homeruns and 49 RBI. In the circle, the Highlassies return Chanlynn Turne, who finished her freshman campaign with a 15-3 record and 2.75 ERA.
