MANSFIELD, Texas --- The Texas A&M men's swimming team won a pair of races and took down a school record on day one of the Art Adamson Invitational on Thursday at the Mansfield ISD Natatorium.
The host Aggies logged victories in the 200-yard freestyle relay and the 50 free, and junior Brock Bonetti broke the 100-yard backstroke school record on the opening leg of the 400 medley relay. On the day, the team combined to earn seven individual NCAA "B" qualifying cuts. Texas A&M trails first-day leader LSU by just eight points, 298-290. Looking up at the Tigers and Aggies were Arizona State (260), TCU (120), Incarnate Word (61) and SMU (54).
The Aggies' dive crew also shined on Thursday at the Mizzou Invitational in Columbia, Mo., with junior Tyler Henschel winning the one-meter dive with a score of 369.80 and sophomore Sam Thornton taking third with 364.60 points.
Texas A&M opened the Adamson Invitational with a hard-fought win over Arizona State in the 200 free relay. The foursome of senior Cory Bolleter, senior Jacob Gonzales, freshman Adam Koster and freshman Raiz Tjon-A-Joe touched in a winning time of 1:18.43 with the Sun Devils right behind in 1:18.51. All four Aggies posted sub-20 second splits with Bolleter leading off in 19.55 and Gonzales scorching the pool in 19.43.
Bolleter, making his season swimming debut, was even faster in the 50 freestyle with a winning time of 19.48, which was nearly a half-second faster than the runner-up. Gonzales also tallied a NCAA "B"cut with a time of 20.16.
The Aggies were stout in the 200 IM with juniors Mauro Castillo and Bonetti posting second and third-place finishes respectively. Castillo became the Aggies' second-fastest 200 IM-er with a lifetime best time of 1:45.88 and Bonetti also posted his lifetime best with a 1:46.36 clocking. Also tallying NCAA "B" cuts were sophomore Angel Martinez, who was sixth with a time of 1:49.10 after a 1:48.46 in the morning prelims, and freshman Anthony Kim, who placed second in the consolation final in a time of 1:48.86.
Texas A&M closed out the day with the 400 medley relay of Bonetti, Castillo, senior Turker Ayar and Bolleter finishing second with a time of 3:08.51. Bonetti led off the relay with a time of 46.23, which took down Jason Bergstrom's old school record of 46.31 from the 2009 NCAA Championships.
The Art Adamson Invitational continues on Friday with the prelims starting at 9:30 a.m. and the finals at 6 p.m.
