COLLEGE STATION— This holiday season the Texas A&M football team continues to give back to the Bryan-College Station community through its association with Twin City Mission.
"We have received such support from the 12th Man and our local community," Aggie head football coach Kevin Sumlin said. "The holiday season is a great opportunity for our team to display the selfless service that is a core value of Texas A&M. Our players have donated their time and money for gifts, spent time serving dinner, playing with youngsters and families and just visiting with the people at Twin City Mission."
"The relationship between Aggie football and Twin City Mission goes back several years," Ron Crozier, Director of Community Relations for Twin City Mission, said. "The players have been very generous in donating not only time to come and visit and work around the facility, but also donating money to buy gifts for young people who may not have a Christmas to speak of. The play area and playground equipment was donated by the Aggie football team. All of it is greatly appreciated, but I think the kids like meeting the players most of all."
Today (Dec. 21), which is Winter Solstice, the shortest day of the year, members of the team took part in a candlelight vigil at Twin City Mission and prayed for the homeless in our community and around the United States. The vigil also remembered those residents who have passed away this past year.
It was five years ago (Dec. 22, 2011) when Aggie offensive lineman Joey Villavisencio, better known as "Joey V", was killed driving home to Jacksonville just hours after handing out Christmas presents to families at Twin City Mission. The playground area at Twin City Mission is named in his honor.
