COLLEGE STATION – The defense of their first SEC Championship begins Thursday evening when the Aggies host Tennessee at 6 p.m. inside Reed Arena in both team's conference-opening contest.
Thursday's showdown will be the final game of the Holiday Hoops promotion which features adult general admission tickets for $5 and youth tickets at $3. Additionally, the A&M-Tennessee matchup will be nationally televised on SEC Network with Brett Dolan calling the play-by-play action and Pat Bradley providing color commentary. Radio coverage will be provided on the Aggie Sports Network, which can be heard locally in the Bryan/College Station area on WTAW (1620 AM).
The Jan. 29 date of the game marks the earliest on the calendar that Texas A&M has officially began league play since the 1940s during Southwest Conference play.
The Aggies enter league play sporting an 8-3 overall record with its only losses coming to a trio of Pac 12 opponents (USC, UCLA and Arizona) who are currently hold spots in the top 25 with a combined record of 37-2.
Led by the impressive sophomore trio of Tyler Davis, Admon Gilder and DJ Hogg, Texas A&M features one of the SEC's youngest team. Despite its youth, A&M again stands among the contenders for the league's regular season crown even after losing four senior starters off last season's squad which won 13 of 18 league contests to share the SEC title with Kentucky before advancing to the NCAA Sweet 16.
Reed Arena has also long been considered a difficult venue for road teams to escape with a victory and conference play has been no exception with Texas A&M owning a 21-6 (.778) record at home in SEC contests the last three seasons.
The Vols come to Aggieland with a 7-5 record on the season but have captured victories in six of their last eight affairs. Led by second-year head coach Rick Barnes, Tennessee is also a young squad that features nearly half of its scoring coming from freshman.
Texas A&M, which boasts only three upperclassmen on its roster, similarly has gotten 73.4 percent of the team's total points this season from freshmen or sophomores.
