No. 8 Texas A&M Drops 1-0 Nail-biter to No. 1 Florida State
Aug 19, 2016 | Soccer
COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The No. 8 Texas A&M Aggies put forth a relentless effort but were unable to erase an early deficit in a 1-0 loss to the No. 1 Florida State Seminoles in the season opener Friday evening at Ellis Field.
The Seminoles scored 1:32 into the contest when Deyna Castellanos took a pass from Emma Koivisto with her back to the goal at 15 yards. Castellanos poked a ball over a defender then took three steps to chase it down, unleashing a shot from 12 yards to the left of the Aggies keeper.
Texas A&M nearly knotted the game heading into halftime. Cienna Arrieta slotted a ball through Seminoles to find Brittany Crabtree running into the penalty box on the right side. Crabtree received the pass and sent in a low driving ball that was just a whisper wide on the left in the 42nd minute.
Florida State went into the intermission with a 6-4 edge in shots, but shots-on-goal and corner kicks were both even at 1-1.
The Aggies kept the pressure on in the second half, outshooting the Seminoles 7-4 and owning a 5-3 edge in corner kicks. Cassie Miller had to make a pair of saves on Haley Pounds shots in the 79th minute to keep the sheet clean.
Ashlynn Harryman nearly shocked Florida State in the 87th when she uncorked a shot from the defensive side of the center circle. Her booming shot took a bounce 10 yards out and was headed just south of the crossbar when Miller scurried back to punch it over the goal to safety.
For the match, Texas A&M owned advantages in shots (11-10), shots-on-goal (4-2) and corner kicks (6-4).
Texas A&M returns to action Sunday when they host the Rice Owls in a 6 pm contest at Ellis Field.
Texas A&M Quotes
Head Coach G. Guerrieri
Opening thoughts…
"If you think about it, I don't that there could have been a worse way to start. You go down 1-0 in the second minute. But the fight that our kids showed, to step right up and play the game all the way through. The goal was a brilliant move by their player and bad defending by us. I was pleased with the way we shook that off and then we just ran out of time. Playing hard for 88 minutes, we just let the first two minutes sink us."
On the difference in today's matchup…
"I think both teams are well coached and organized. They were trying to compact space in the midfield that they could defend against us and trying to collapse on top of Mickey (Harvey) every time she got the ball. Whenever she turned and broke out she was fouled. You could see that was a strategy and we expect to see that strategy all year long. I think the rest of our midfield did a nice job keeping it. Haley Pounds did well keeping control of the ball and move. It's just unfortunate. They had a moment of brilliance in front of the goal and we didn't."
Junior forward Haley Pounds
On the match…
"One of our mottos this year is to be relentless, and I think we showed that after allowing the goal in the early minutes and then just fighting all the way trying to keep them out of our net. Overall I'm proud of our team and the way we fought."
On staying with it after the early deficit…
"We just kept putting pressure on them and creating chances. The goals are going to come as you keep going through the season. But I think for us to create those chances was a positive tonight."
