Freshman RB Williams receives honorable mention weekly honors from Tyler Rose Award
Texas A&M quarterback Trevor Knight received national player of the week honors from the Davey O'Brien Award and the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award on Tuesday for his outstanding play in the Aggies' win over then-No. 17 Arkansas last weekend.
Knight, a graduate transfer quarterback from San Antonio via the University of Oklahoma, accounted for 383 total yards and four touchdowns against the Razorbacks. Knight rushed for a game- and career-high 157 yards and scored on 42- and 49-yard touchdown runs. He also passed for 225 yards and a pair of touchdowns, including a 92-yarder that gave the Aggies their first lead of the night and tied for the fifth-longest in school history.
Freshman running back Trayveon Williams, who was named the SEC Freshman of the Week on Monday, received honorable mention honors from the Tyler Rose Award. Williams rushed for a career-high 153 yards and two touchdowns on 12 carries against Arkansas.
For the season, Knight has generated 1,363 total yards with 308 via the ground and 1,055 through the air. Knight and Louisville's Lamar Jackson are the only players in the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision that have rushed for more than 300 yards and passed for more than 1,000 yards. Knight ranks No. 2 in the SEC and No. 15 in the FBS with a 340.8 total offense average. A dangerous runner, Knight is tied for the SEC lead with six rushing scores and has produced a first down or a touchdown on nine of his 11 rushing attempts on third/fourth down.
The Davey O'Brien National Quarterback Award winner will be announced on Dec. 8 during ESPN's The Home Depot College Football Awards. The winner is not required to have won a weekly award during the season. A list of 16 semifinalists will be announced on Nov. 10, while the three finalists will be named on Nov. 22. The Davey O'Brien Fan Vote, now in its 10th year, gives fans a chance to play a role in determining the award winner by voting daily at VoteOBrien.org.
The Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award, announced in 2012 by the Tyler Chamber and SPORTyler, recognizes the top offensive player in Division 1 football who also exhibits the enduring characteristics that define Earl Campbell: integrity, performance, teamwork, sportsmanship, drive, community, and tenacity; specifically tenacity to persist and determination to overcome adversity and injury in pursuit of reaching goals.
