COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Texas A&M signees Makena Patterson and Morgan Davis were named to 2016 VolleyballMag.com Girls High School All-American teams, Volleyball Magazine recently announced.
Patterson, a 6-3 middle blocker from Xavier College Preparatory in Phoenix, Arizona, was named to the 12-member second team, just missing out on the 12-member first team. Davis, a 6-4 middle blocker from Bishop Moore Catholic High School in Orlando, Florida, received honorable mention.
Patterson led Xavier to the 2016 Arizona Interscholastic Association (AIA) 6A state semifinals, a 34-7 record, and a No. 19 national ranking according to MaxPreps. Patterson also was an AVCA 2016-17 Under Armour First-Team All-America selection and helped lead Team West to a 3-0 victory over Team East at the 2016 Under Armour All-America Volleyball Match in Columbus, Ohio, last month.
A finalist for the Arizona Sports Awards Big Schools Girls Volleyball Athlete of the Year and listed No. 97 in PrepVolleyball.com's list of Senior Aces, Patterson was a three-year starting middle blocker and four-time district champion for coach Lamar Bryant and the XCP Gators. As a junior, the 6-3 middle was named all-state second team, and she earned all-state honorable mention as a sophomore.
Patterson plays club ball for Arizona Storm. Coached by Terri Spann, Patterson helped lead the team to a second place finish in the 17 Open Division at the 2015 USAV GJNC and a third place finish in the 18 Open Division at the 2016 USAV GJNC.
Davis is a star two-sport athlete, having excelled in both volleyball and basketball. Ranked No. 84 in PrepVolleyball.com's list of "Senior Aces", Davis led the Bishop Moore volleyball team to a 32-1 record and a second consecutive state championship in 2016. Coached by Tanya Jarvis, the Hornets were No. 8 in the nation entering the state tournament, where Davis hit 1.000 in the championship match, collecting 12 kills in 12 attempts in the sweep against Ponte Vedra.
Davis plays club ball for Top Select Volleyball Academy, and last summer her team won the AAU national championship in the 17 Open Division and placed third at the USAV Girls Junior National Championships.
Davis, who didn't start playing volleyball until her sophomore year of high school, is a four-year starter and two-time State of Florida District 5A Player of the Year in basketball. She received several scholarship offers to play collegiate basketball, including an offer from LSU prior to deciding to pursue volleyball.
