AUSTIN – Texas A&M senior swimmer Sarah Gibson won the 100-meter butterfly to highlight the Aggies' first day at the Arena Pro Swim Series at Austin on Friday at the Jamail Texas Swim Center.
Gibson, from San Antonio, Texas, was the only swimmer under 59 seconds as she touched the wall in 59.94, which was .3 of a second faster than the runner-up. 2017 signee Taylor Pike, who will join the Aggies next fall, was fifth in the race with a time of 1:00.67. Both times met the qualifying standard for next summer's U.S. National Championships.
The Aggies had a dominant showing in the 200-meter breaststroke with three entries in the Championship final. Sophomore Sydney Pickrem took third in 1:27.42, just .05 of a second behind former Texas A&M All-American Breeja Larson. Senior Ashley McGregor took sixth in 2:29.03 and junior Esther Gonzalez was seventh in 2:30.62. All four times were U.S. Nationals qualifiers.
Also advancing to a Championship final on Friday was junior Beryl Gastaldello, who took eighth in the 100 free with a time of 56.96.
