Aggies record 1-2 finish in 5,000m during first day of Charlie Thomas Invitational

COLLEGE STATION – Texas A&M recorded a 1-2 finish in the men's 5,000 meters as the senior tandem of Austin Wells and Christian Farris scored 18 points in the event for the Aggies on the first day of the Charlie Thomas Invitational at Gilliam Indoor on Friday.

COLLEGE STATION – Texas A&M recorded a 1-2 finish in the men's 5,000 meters as the senior tandem of Austin Wells and Christian Farris scored 18 points in the event for the Aggies on the first day of the Charlie Thomas Invitational at Gilliam Indoor on Friday.
 
With 30 points from the first day of action the Texas A&M men lead the nine-team field over Rice (13) and Clemson (10). UCLA is the early women's leader with 24 points over Rice (23) and Texas A&M (19). Action continues on Saturday with finals beginning at 2 p.m.
 
Wells won the 5,000m in 14:30.04 with Farris runner-up in 14:50.44. A third Aggie in the race, Julian Castellano, placed fifth in 15:03.39.
 
Devin Norton ran 17:25.83 for third place in the women's 5,000m as she finished behind Cali Roper of Rice (16:41.59) and TCU's Nicole Hicks (17:22.93). Aggies in the race included Kelsey Persyn (17:53.47) and Olivia Arriaza (17:53.53), who finished sixth and seventh.
 
In the women's distance medley relay the Texas A&M foursome of Arin Rice (3:30.51), Jarra Owens (54.75), Miah Nelson (2:09.87) and Haley Deakins (5:04.05) clocked 11:39.18 as runner-up to Rice (11:35.32) while Clemson (11:53.19) finished third. The time for the Aggies ranks No. 9 on the Texas A&M all-time list.
 
The men's distance medley relay was claimed by Clemson in 9:53.74 with the Aggies runner-up in 9:54.11 while another Clemson squad (9:54.34) finished third with UCLA (9:55.63) fourth. The Texas A&M quartet included Ian Cazares (3:00.62), Tarik Tyler (48.78), Gaines Kinsey (1:50.77), and Taylor Clayton (4:13.94).
 
Andy Bloom of Cincinnati leads the men's heptathlon with 3,212 points. Aggie Nathan Hite (3,040) is currently in second place while teammates Landon Malouf (2,826) and Rodney Ripley (2,698) are in sixth and seventh place.
 
Hite topped the field in the 60m with a time of 7.05 (865 points) and then added a 22-7.25 (788) long jump. Ripley finished second overall in the shot put with a mark of 43-7.75 (686 points) while Hite was third at 43-5.75 (682). Malouf led the Aggie trio in the high jump with a clearance of 6-3.5 (731) to place third as Hite was fourth at 6-2.25 (705).
