NORMAN, Okla. – Texas A&M sophomore golfer Chandler Phillips climbed up to the fifth spot in the updated Arnold Palmer Cup Rankings released Thursday. The rankings, based on the Golfstat NCAA Player Rankings, determine the participants in the Arnold Palmer Cup over the summer.
Â
The Arnold Palmer Cup is the annual collegiate Ryder-Cup style event pitting the best collegiate golfers from around the United States and Europe. A team consisting of American-born golfers meets Team Europe at the Atlanta Athletic Cup starting on June 9. The event features match play pairings over the course of three days to determine a champion. The current format consists of five four-ball matches, five foursome matches and two sets of ten singles matches.
Â
The final rankings will be released on March 9 with the top six golfers from Europe and the United States automatically qualifying for the Arnold Palmer Cup. The remaining ten-man rosters will be announced on March 16 during the first round of the Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by MasterCard. The four final players for the United States are selected by a committee and coaches' pick.
Â
Phillips sat in 12th place when the initial rankings were announced on Feb. 9, but ascended to fifth following his impressive victory at the John Burns Intercollegiate. The Huntsville, Texas, native carded the second best 54-hole score in Texas A&M men's golf history by shooting 15-under par for the tournament. The 2016 Second Team All-SEC performer has shot par or lower in 15 of 18 rounds this season and is on pace for the best scoring average in school history (69.89), a full stroke better than the current record holder (Jordan Russell – 71.60 in 2010-11).
Â
Phillips and the rest of the 13th-ranked Aggies are back in action Feb. 27-28 during the Louisiana Classics, which take place at Oakbourne Country Club Lafayette, La.
