COLLEGE STATION – The No. 1 Texas A&M Equestrian team travels to No. 5 Georgia to take on the Bulldogs at 9 a.m. CT on Saturday at the UGA Equestrian Center.
Â
"We are looking forward to going back to Athens," head coach Tana McKay said. "We know it is going to be a tough matchup. We have had some time to correct some mistakes from our meet against South Carolina but the girls have worked hard in practice. I am excited to see some good rides against tough competition."
Â
The Aggies (7-2, 3-1 SEC) are looking to extend their SEC lead after their dominant 14-6 win over No. 8 South Carolina on Feb. 10. The Maroon and White won both Hunt Seat events, 3-2, while controlling the Western arena with 4-1 wins in Reining and Horsemanship. The Aggies also earned MOP honors in both Western events with senior Kaci Fisher earning Horsemanship honors and sophomore Haley Franc taking Reining.Â
Â
Fisher tallied her fourth MOP and seventh win of the season in Horsemanship with a 77-71.5 victory over Maddie Thiel. In Reining, Franc topped Bailey Walters, 76-73, earning her second MOP of the season. Â
Â
Georgia (7-4, 3-2 SEC) is coming off of a 10-8 upset-victory over No. 3 Auburn on Feb. 12. The Bulldogs swept MOP honors against the Tigers and won Equitation on Flat, 3-2, before dominating reigning, 4-1.
Â
The Aggies will take on one of their own as they face assistant coach, Laura Brainard, in the Western arena. A 2014 Texas A&M graduate, Brainard was a four-year member of the Texas A&M equestrian team, while leading the Aggies to the 2012 NCEA National Championship title and later being named the MOP in Horsemanship for her senior season. Brainard was also a volunteer assistant coach for the Aggies during the 2014-2015 season.
Â
The two teams competed earlier this season on Nov. 3 in College Station where the Aggies finished on top, 13-7. The Maroon and White swept Horsemanship 5-0 with Fisher earning MOP honors. Junior Kai DeVoglaer earned MOP honors and led the Aggies to a victory in Fences after her 87-83 win. Junior Alex Desiderio (87) and sophomore Rebekah Chenelle (86) both earned season high scores in Equitation on Flat to help the Aggies win both Hunt Seat events, 3-2.
