COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The 20th-ranked Texas A&M women's tennis team concludes a four-match homestand on Sunday as the Aggies take on No. 1-ranked and undefeated Florida at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center. First serve is at 11 a.m., and all fans with a valid Texas A&M student ID will be admitted free.
"Florida won the national indoors and are undefeated so far this season. They are no doubt the true No. 1 in the nation," Texas A&M head coach Mark Weaver said. "It's not every day that you get the opportunity to play the top team in the nation, and there will definitely be some added excitement going up into this match."
The Aggies (8-4, 0-1 SEC) opened SEC play with a 4-2 setback to 19th-ranked South Carolina on Friday at the Mitchell Tennis Center. Florida (10-0, 1-0 SEC), the two-time defending SEC champion and the winner of the 2017 ITA National Team Indoor Championship last month, thumped LSU, 7-0, on Friday in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. It was the Gators' 16th consecutive SEC regular-season victory.
Individually, No. 45 Rachel Pierson is the Aggies' highest ranked singles player. The senior is a team-leading 17-7 in all matches, and she has played every dual match at the No. 1 line where she is 7-4. Rutuja Bhosale, No. 75 in the national singles rankings, is 14-6 overall and leads the Aggies in victories in dual matches only with an 8-2 mark, all at the No. 2 line. Sophomore Domenica Gonzalez sports a team-high six-match win streak, and Bhosale is riding a three-match win streak.
Bhosale and Pierson are No. 14 in the nation in doubles. The senior duo is 17-5 overall, including 6-3 in dual matches, all at the No. 1 line.
Senior Stefania Hristov and junior Macarena Olivares are 3-0 since pairing up for the first time against SMU three matches ago. Hristov now has 86 career victories to tie for 10th in the school records for career doubles victories. She is two wins away from moving into a tie for ninth. Bhosale is not far behind with 82 career doubles victories
Florida boasts seven nationally ranked singles players, including four who are ranked in the top 25. Josie Kuhlman and Ingrid Neel are Nos. 10 and 11, respectively. Belinda Woolcock is No. 18 and Anna Danilina is No. 24.
The Gators also have four doubles teams in the national rankings. Kourtney Keegan and Brooke Austin, ranked 28th and 91st, respectively in singles, are a team-high No. 13 in doubles. Danilina and Neel are No. 16, and Kuhlman and Woolcock round out the Gators' three top-20 ranked teams with a No. 20 listing.
Florida has won the last two meetings against the Aggies and holds a 4-2 lead in the all-time series. Last year, the then-No. 6 Gators defeated A&M, 4-0, in Gainesville, Florida.
The series is tied, 1-1, in matches played in College Station with both matches being determined by the last match standing. In 2013, Texas A&M's first year as a member of the SEC, the Aggies shocked then-No. 4 Florida, 4-3, in the first-ever meeting. The Gators topped A&M, 4-3, when the teams last met at the Mitchell Tennis Center on March 24, 2015.
The Aggies most recently defeated the Gators on April 18, 2014, topping Florida, 4-3, in the quarterfinals of the SEC Tournament in Columbia, Missouri.
