COLLEGE STATION – Postseason awards were announced by the SEC and USTFCCCA on Monday prior to the NCAA Indoor Championships being held this weekend at Texas A&M's Gilliam Indoor Stadium on March 10-11.
Â
Two Aggies, Fred Kerley and Jazmine Fray, received region honors as each were named South Central Track Athlete of the Year for the indoor season. Kerley was also selected as Men's Runner of the Year in the SEC.
Â
Kerley, a senior from Taylor, Texas, is the current world leader in the 400m with a 45.02 clocking on a banked 200m track. He also produced a time of 44.94 when he became the first sprinter to run under 45 seconds on an oversized track. Kerley bettered the Texas A&M school record of 45.03 set by Deon Lendore in 2014.
Â
Fray, a sophomore from Long Island, New York, broke the collegiate record in the 800m, which was set in 2005, with a 2:00.69 performance at Clemson and then won the SEC title in 2:02.62.
Â
Other conference honors for Texas A&M included All-SEC First Team accolades for Jazmine Fray, Devin Dixon, Fred Kerley, Mylik Kerley, Richard Rose and Audie Wyatt. Receiving All-SEC Second Team honors were Danyel White, Carl Johansson, Lindon Victor and Will Williams.
Â
Making the SEC All-Freshman Team for producing the top finish by a freshman in their respective events were Danyel White (200m), Jaevin Reed (400m), Lajarvia Brown (triple jump) and Devin Dixon (800m).
Â
During the SEC Championships, held on a 300m track, Kerley won the 400m final in 45.21 after posting a 44.94 in the prelims. He also ran the first leg on the winning 4x400 relay as the Aggies produced the fastest time ever on an oversized track with a 3:02.39.
Â
With the pair of SEC victories, Kerley matched the feat of Lendore in winning the 400m and 4x400 relay titles. They are the only two sprinters to accomplish the indoor double in the conference over the past 10 years.
Â
On the 4x400 relay Kerley became the first sprinter to split faster than 45 seconds on the opening leg. His 44.96 carry at the Razorback Invitational propelled Texas A&M to a 3:02.52 collegiate record performance as they bettered the previous mark of 3:02.86 set by the Aggies in winning the 2015 NCAA Indoor title.
Â
This indoor season Fray is undefeated in racing distances from 400m to the mile. In December she opened with a school record in the 1,000m (2:43.15). On consecutive weekends in January, Fray won the mile in 4:44.87, which ranks No. 2 on the Aggie all-time list, and then claimed a 400m race in a career best of 53.91.
Â
The first 800m race for Fray came at the Razorback Invitational, where she improved the Texas A&M school record with a 2:04.76 victory, bettering the previous mark of 2:05.79 set by teammate Katie Willard in 2016.
Â
Fray also added a split of 51.99 as the third leg of the world-leading 4x400 when the Aggies won the relay event at Clemson in 3:29.74, just 0.02 off the school record.
