KANE'OHE, Hawai'i- The No. 16 Texas A&M women's golf team leads the Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational by four strokes after the first day of the tournament. Junior Maddie Szeryk leads all individuals in the tournament with a 6-under 138, pacing four Aggies in the top 25.
"I am really proud of our team, as we really played well today," said Texas A&M head coach Trelle McCombs. "We had really good performances up and down our lineup, which is what you need to have happen in team golf."
The Aggies shot a 4-under 572 over 36 holes on Tuesday, including a first round 283 (-5). Washington State is in second in the 15-team field, shooting an even-par 576 at the Kane'ohe Klipper Golf Course.
Szeryk, who shot under par in both rounds Tuesday, has finished second in both tournaments this spring, and is looking for her second career victory.
Freshman Courtney Dow is tied for 12th at even par after shooting 70-74=144 on the par 72 / 6,099 yard course. Bianca Fabrizio is t-17th shooting 77-69 to post a 2-over 146. The 2016 individual champion of this event, Thanya Pattamakijsakul, shot a 3-over 72-75=147 to tie for 25th.
Competing as an individual, Chloe Velasco is tied for 34th at 5-over, and notched her first career par-or-better round in a collegiate tournament with a first round 72. Andrea Jonama rounded out the Texas A&M lineup tied for 49th at 7-over 151. Begona Aranguren competed as an individual, shooting a 159 and tying for 84th.
The Aggies return to action for the third and final round of the Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational at 8 a.m. HT / 1 p.m. CT on Wednesday.
