PALM CITY, Fla. – The Texas A&M men's golf team sits in fifth place Monday evening following the second round of the Valspar Collegiate Invitational at Floridian National Golf Club.
"As good as we played yesterday, today was equally as bad," head coach J.T. Higgins said of the Aggies who entered the day atop the team standings. "It's a 54-hole tournament and you've got to play them all. We just didn't do a very good job in really any aspect of the game today. The conditions were much better for scoring today and we didn't take advantage of it."
Texas A&M (288-295=583, +15) stands at 15-over par for the tournament while the field chases team-leader Wake Forest (+3) which was four-under as a team Monday to take over the pole position on the 14-team leaderboard.
"We're still in great position to have an awesome tournament," Higgins added. "The teams are all bunched up, so just about everybody feels like they've got a chance if they play well tomorrow. We're going to come out and try to fix what went wrong today, finish strong and get out of here with a good showing."
Junior Andrew Paysse (70-74=144, +2) continues to stand out as the highest-ranking Aggie in the player standings with a share of 11th place, but sophomore Cameron Champ was A&M's top performer during the second round. Making the turn on Monday at one-over, the Sacramento, Calif., native carded four birdies on the back nine to finish at even par and surge 13 spots up the leaderboard to end the day in a tie for 26th.
Freshman Dan Erickson (72-75=147, +5) also owns a share of 26th after a four-over round of 75.
"Cam played terrific today," Higgins commented. "He was so much better than yesterday and had great control of his ball. Pretty much everybody else had some flashes of good golf today, but we just made too many mistakes."
Sophomore Chandler Phillips (70-79=149, +7) holds a tie for 43rd after 36 holes of competition while junior Kavan Eubank (82-75=157, +15) is tied for 65th.
Meanwhile, sophomore Max Miller (78-77=155, +13) sits in a tie for 60th as he competes as an individual.
The Valspar Collegiate concludes Tuesday morning with the Aggies slated to begin teeing off at 9 a.m. (CT) paired alongside golfers from Georgia Tech and LSU. Results and live scoring can be found on GolfStat.com and fans can also follow the action with updates via twitter at @AggieMensGolf.
