BATON ROUGE, La. – The Texas A&M men's golf team is back in action for its final tune-up before postseason play during the Tiger Classic, which will take place Thursday at LSU's University Club.
Â
Texas A&M's most recent action came at the Aggie Invitational, however, that tournament's final round was cancelled due to heavy rain allowing A&M add the Tiger Classic to its schedule. The 36-hole event begins with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. Thursday and concludes with the second round in the afternoon. The course will play at par 72 and 7,419 yards for the event.
Â
"The rainout had a silver lining in that it allowed us to come over to Baton Rouge and play in their tournament Thursday," Texas A&M head coach J.T. Higgins said. "LSU is one of the regional sites for NCAAs and we have never seen the course so it's a great opportunity to play the University Club. It's also great to get one more competition in before the SEC Championships next week."
Â
The 14th-ranked Aggies join a seven-team field that includes two other teams prepping for the SEC Championship in No. 7 LSU and Arkansas as well as four other Louisiana schools in Centenary, McNeese State, New Orleans and Southeastern Louisiana.
Â
The Aggie lineup consists of juniors Cameron Champ and Andrew Paysse, sophomores Chandler Phillips and Brandon Smith as well as freshman Josh Gliege. Rookie Dan Erickson also joins the A&M contingency for the trip to the Pelican State and will compete as an individual.Â
Â
Phillips is enjoying one of the best seasons by an Aggie in recent memory, having already carded seven top-10 placings, including two wins, during the first 10 events of his sophomore campaign. His 70.55 scoring average not only leads the Aggies but would set the A&M stroke average record for a single season.
Â
Champ, meanwhile, is also putting together an impressive campaign with a 71.85 scoring average. The junior has one individual title on the season as well as five top-10 finishes, including a runner-up showing at the Aggie Invitational.
Â
As a team, the Aggies have finished in the top-half of competition in all 10 events this season with three runner-up finishes. After the event, the Aggies will travel to Sea Island Golf Club at St. Simons Island, Ga., for the 2017 SEC Championships April 21-24.
Â
The Aggies will be paired alongside golfers from Arkansas and LSU during the Tiger Classic. Scoring and results can be found on GolfStat.com after the conclusion of each round as well as live updates via twitter at @AggieMensGolf.
