COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Texas A&M senior Rachel Pierson has been named the SEC Women's Tennis Player of the Week, the Southeastern Conference announced today. It is Pierson's first time to receive the honor in her three-year A&M career.
Pierson posted a 4-0 record at No. 1 singles last week, including the highest ranked singles victory of her collegiate career and the highest by an A&M player since 2013 with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over No. 4 Astra Sharma of Vanderbilt.
Pierson notched the fourth highest ranked singles win in her career and the third highest of the season in the following match, defeating 17th-ranked Aldila Sutjiadi of Kentucky, 6-0, 2-6, 6-4, to help the Aggies upset the 11th-ranked Wildcats. The Princeton, New Jersey, native then extended her spring season-best winning streak to five matches with two straight-set victories in back-to-back matches against Prairie View A&M to close out the Aggies' regular-season home schedule.
Pierson, a team-leading 24-11 overall in singles, including 14-8 in dual matches only all at the No. 1 line, climbed to a season-high No. 22 in this week's ITA singles rankings, marking the second highest singles ranking of her collegiate career. In addition, she and doubles partner Rutuja Bhosale moved up to a Texas A&M all-time No. 4 in the ITA doubles rankings released on Tuesday.
The Aggies close out the regular season this weekend, taking on No. 23 Tennessee on Friday in Knoxville and No. 2 Georgia on Sunday in Athens. The 2017 SEC Women's Tennis Tournament is slated for April 19-23 at Vanderbilt's Brownlee O. Currey Jr., Tennis Center in Nashville.
