Texas A&M Nominees for McWhorter Post-Graduate Scholarships

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.– Jeffrey Prothro of the Texas A&M men's track and field team and Sarah Gibson of the Aggies women's swimming and diving team have been nominated for the H. Boyd McWhorter Scholar-Athlete Post-Graduate Scholarship by Texas A&M University.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.– Jeffrey Prothro of the Texas A&M men's track and field team and Sarah Gibson of the Aggies women's swimming and diving team have been nominated for the H. Boyd McWhorter Scholar-Athlete Post-Graduate Scholarship by Texas A&M University.
 
The H. Boyd McWhorter Scholar-Athlete Post-Graduate Scholarship has been presented by the Southeastern Conference since 1986 to the league's top male and female scholar-athletes. 
 
The Southeastern Conference will name the 2017 recipients of the H. Boyd McWhorter Scholar-Athlete Post-Graduate Scholarship on April 27.
 
Highlights of Texas A&M's nominees include:
 
JEFFREY PROTHRO, Men's Track & Field, Texas A&M
Major:  Business Management
 
  • 3-time SEC Academic Honor Roll
  • 4-time Texas A&M Athletic Director's Academic Honor Roll
  • 2014 SEC All-Freshman Team (Triple Jump)
  • 3-time scoring finalist in triple jump at SEC Championships – 2014 (8th outdoor), 2016 (6th indoor), 2017 (7th indoor)
  • Advanced to 2016 NCAA Outdoor Championships with ninth-place finish at NCAA West Preliminary rounds. Finished 15th in NCAA final, earning second-team All-America honor
  • Has recorded 12 victories in triple jump amid a total of 21 top three finishes during his collegiate career at Texas A&M
  • Indoor triple jump best mark of 52-1 ¾ (15.89) ranks 11th on Texas A&M all-time list
  • Outdoor triple jump best mark of 52-8 (16.05) ranks ninth on Texas A&M all-time list
  • Treasurer of the Nu Alpha Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc. 
  • As a member of Kappa Alpha Psi host a weekly mentorship program at local intermediate and middle schools
  • As a member of Kappa Alpha Psi host "One Can We Can" event that collects canned goods of over 100 pounds from the community to give to Brazos Valley Food Bank
  • As a member of Kappa Alpha Psi provide backpacks at the beginning of each school year filled with supplies that go to less fortunate students who cannot afford the necessities to succeed
  • Adopt-a-street participant, a community service event where we get the tools from the city and clean an entire street every month of the year
 
SARAH GIBSON, Women's Swimming & Diving, Texas A&M
Major:  Biomedical Engineering
 
  • Will graduate in May with a degree in Biomedical Engineering while carrying a perfect 4.0 GPA
  • President's Endowed Scholar.
  • First-team Academic All-American in 2016 and nominated for the honor again in 2017
  • Four-time member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll
  • Named the 2017 SEC Co-Scholar-Athlete of the Year in women's swimming and diving
  • Earned two medals at the 2016 FINA Short Course World Championships in fall of 2016, including a gold with Team USA's 400 medley relay.
  • Seven-time SEC Champion and 15-time All-American
  • Won Swimmer of the Meet Award and and SEC Commissioner's Trophy in 2016-17 as high point scorer at SEC Championships
  • Won 100 and 200 butterfly and 500 freestyle at SEC Championships
  • Earned first-team All-American honors in 100 and 200 fly at NCAA Championships in 2016-17
  • Swam on all five of Aggies' relays in NCAA Championships, including two runner-up finishes
 
Each year, the SEC, in conjunction with AT&T, an SEC official sponsor, provides the league's male and female McWhorter Scholar-Athlete Post-Graduate Scholarship recipients with a $15,000 post-graduate scholarship.  The 26 remaining male and female finalists for the award will also receive a $7,500 post-graduate scholarship. 
 
The award recipients are chosen by a committee of Faculty Athletics Representatives from the 14 SEC institutions and are honored at the SEC Spring Meetings in Sandestin, Fla., in early June.
 
Last year's McWhorter Award recipients were Forrest Gamble of the Ole Miss men's golf team and Haylie McCleney of the Alabama softball team.
