ABILENE, Texas – Texas A&M men's tennis incoming freshman Pranav Kumar stormed through a loaded field to claim the 2017 USTA Texas Grand Slam Championship Friday afternoon at the Eager Tennis Center on the campus of Abilene Christian.

The Plano, Texas native was seeded fourth before claiming wins over four seeded players en route to the crown. The right-hander picked up seven victories in Abilene, including five in straight sets. In addition to claiming the tournament title, Kumar was named the Clarence Mabry Sportsmanship Award winner.

"Steve (Denton) and I were not able to attend the finals, but we both glue to the live stream," Texas A&M assistant coach Kevin O'Shea said. "We are so proud of Pranav on this huge accomplishment. We were very impressed with his ability to close out the first set with an ace, service winner and a forehand winner."

Kumar has been ranked as high as the third-best senior in Texas by tennisrecruiting.net and joins February-signee Juan Carlos Aguilar in the 2017 Texas A&M men's tennis recruiting class. Aguilar and Kumar will join the Maroon & White squad that claimed a share of the 2017 SEC Championship and advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16 for the 14th time in program history last season.
