COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The Texas A&M soccer squad hosts the Northwestern State Lady Demons Thursday on Ellis Field in the final tune-up for the 2017 campaign. First kick is slated for 7 pm.
In their first exhibition match, the Aggies stymied Sam Houston State 5-0 on Sunday. The Maroon and White got a hat trick from Haley Pounds and Ally Watt added one goal and two assists in an electric performance. Texas A&M's defense held the Bearkats to two shots on goal and Cosette Morché and Olivia Ausmus combined on the shutout.
Texas A&M returns 13 letterwinners from the 2016 campaign, including eight of 11 starters. The returnees account for 24 of the Aggies' 27 goals from last season and the Maroon and White add the potent Watt, who redshirted last season while playing for the United States U20 Women's National Team. Texas A&M welcomes back All-American Mikaela Harvey, along with fellow All-SEC performer Pounds and former SEC All-Freshman honorees Emily Bates, Grace Piper and Watt.
The Aggies finished the 2016 season with a 12-8-2 record. The Maroon and White appeared in their 22nd consecutive NCAA Division I Championship and advanced to the Second Round for the 19th consecutive year.
Northwestern State returns 18 letterwinners from a squad that finished 10-8-1 in 2016. Last year the Lady Demons finished third in the Southland Conference with a 7-3-1 mark. Senior goalkeeper Alex Lantham earned Southland Conference Goalkeeper of the Year recognition last year with a 1.11 goals-against average and seven shutouts. Top returners on the offensive end include junior April Trowbridge (6 g, 4 a, 16 pts) and seniors Esdeina Gonzalez (4 g, 6 a, 14 pts) and Caché Haley (4 g, 3 a, 11 pts).
