Each week 12thMan.com will touch base with a newcomer to the Aggie soccer squad. This week junior goalkeeper Cosette Morché chatted about her emergence as a goalkeeper and Texas A&M's prospects for the 2017 campaign.
Â
Â
What do you remember from your first game as a goalkeeper?
I was 11 and playing on a boys team. They would look out for me like I was their little sister. I really enjoyed being back there, and from that day, I knew it was something I wanted to keep doing. It's a position that's a difference maker in every single match.
Â
At what point did you think you might have a future as a Division I goalkeeper?
My height is a real advantage in goal, but also I think I was willing to go all out, make the diving saves and put my whole body into it. You have to have no fear in sacrificing your body to make the save. With that, I knew I possessed one of the things you needed to be a great goalkeeper. Since then, I've just been working on all the technical parts of being a goalkeeper.
Â
What are your career aspirations?
I really would love to pursue a professional career in soccer. After that, I definitely have a strong desire to get into coaching.
Â
What would you say your goalkeeping strengths are?
In addition to the height and being fearless in making saves, I would say ball distribution with my hands is really a strength. I've worked really hard at being able to find the best outlet and get a windmill throw out to our backs so we can transition to the offensive end.
Â
What have you been working on with Coach Guerrieri?
We've really been working on coming off my line and using a block... making myself bigger in the K position and being able to make more saves. We've also worked on reading situations more rather than just guessing.
Â
How do you feel spring workouts went?
I am so happy I enrolled in January rather than waiting for the new school year to start. It really allowed me to get to know the players on the team. It's such a great group of girls and the spring was a great experience. On the field, it was great work with team. Almost everybody that will be playing this fall was here in the spring, so we were able to accomplish so much as far as learning how to work together. The improvement from the beginning of spring to the end was awesome.
Â
You've taken a similar route to get to Texas A&M as Dani Rice. Have you spoken with her and has she given you any advice?
Yes. It was great to talk to Dani. She's been in my shoes. She told me to stay positive, continue to make friends and enjoy the experience. She's been a great person to confide in.
Â
What made you decide to transfer?
I felt like I was missing something. Like I wasn't learning anything new about the game or growing my game personally. I wanted to try something new and broaden my horizons.
Â
How much had you heard about Texas A&M in high school?
I really hadn't heard much about it. I probably heard it in passing, but I was unfamiliar with the school. One of my teammates at Louisiana (Alexyia Turner) is the daughter of one of the A&M football coaches (David Turner), so I came with her to a game last year at Kyle Field and it was such an eye-opening experience. The 12th Man and whole game day experience was unreal.
Â
Defense has always been a strength at Texas A&M. How does it feel to play behind this defense?
There is so much talent back there. It really makes life easier for a goalkeeper. I know they're looking out for me and they know I'm looking out for them. I'd say our midfield and attack helps, too. They are always up pressing, so the more the ball is on the other end of the field, the easier the job is for us.
Â
What are your thoughts about the team's performances in the exhibition games?
I thought it was a great start. We really didn't get much work in goal because of how well our offense played. It was fun watching how explosive they can be, but Coach G and Phil have shown us there is a lot to still work on. The goal is to get better each game.
