One of the legends of the Aggie baseball program, Jim Hacker was named to the Texas A&M Athletic Hall of Fame's 2017 induction class and will be formally honored at the 40th annual Burgess Banquet on Sept. 15 by the Lettermen's Association.
Hacker was a four-year letterwinner (1971-74) for Tom Chandler. A two-time team captain, he was All-Southwest Conference, SWC Player of the Year, Texas A&M Athlete of the Year and a consensus All-American at third base in 1974 after hitting .477 in SWC games, the fourth highest mark in league history at the time.
In the final series of the 1974 season against the Texas Longhorns, Hacker batted 6-for-12, including a home run to tie the first game of the series in the ninth as Texas A&M went on to snap the Longhorns' 53-game home winning streak.
Hacker helped the Aggies set the team single season batting average record at .342 in 1974, leading the team in batting average (.406), triples (5) and walks (34). Hacker led the Aggies in walks all four years of his career and topped the team in doubles in 1972 and 1973 and total bases in 1972.
In 1973, he earned All-SWC honors and was a member of the USA Baseball team that won the gold medal at the World Amateur Games in Nicaragua, becoming the first USA Baseball team to win a world championship.
Hacker graduated with a bachelor's degree in management and was drafted in the fifth round by the Atlanta Braves in 1974, and played two years in the Braves' organization.
Joining Hacker in the 2017 class were Danielle Adams '11 from women's basketball, Antonio Armstrong '94 from football, Jessica Beard '11 from women's track and field, Jim Hacker '74 from baseball and Von Miller '11 from football and Eric Sehn '09 from men's swimming and diving.
