Texas A&M senior swimmer Jonathan Tybur (The Woodlands, Texas) has earned a spot on the 2017-18 USA Swimming national team, USA Swimming announced on Friday.

Tybur, a two-time team captain for the Aggies, made Team USA in the 200 breaststroke. Swimmers qualify for the national team by achieving one of the six fastest times in each race from the combined results of the 2017
Phillips 66/USA Swimming National Championships/World Championship Trials, the 2017 FINA World Championships,
the 2017 World University Games and the 2017 U.S. Open.

"Jonathan just has a great story," Texas A&M men's coach Jay Holmes said. "He has been able to do so much more than anyone ever thought possible. The fact is that most everyone thought his ultimate success was just to keep swimming (due to his battle with ulcerative colitis), but he has succeeded at such an elite level.  We all are watching to see just what he does next...whatever it is, it will be awesome!"

Tybur's ongoing battle with the debilitating condition has captured the attention of observers across the country. Tybur earned a 2017 National STUDENT-Athlete Day Giant Steps Award earlier this year and he will be honored at the annual Giant Steps Awards Banquet and Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony on Oct. 26 in Orlando, Fla. Tybur, who attended College Park High School in The Woodlands, Texas, was diagnosed with the autoimmune disease at 15. He enrolled at A&M as a non-scholarship swimmer but was able to overcome his condition to become a team captain for the Aggies' swimming and diving team and earn All-America honors at the 2017 NCAA Championships.
