OLYMPIA FIELDS, Ill. – The Texas A&M men's golf team sits one shot off the lead Friday after the opening 18 holes of the OFCC/Fighting Illini Invitational.
In a highly competitive field that includes 10 top-25 teams, the Aggies (291, +3) find themselves alone in fourth place with a one-over par, 281 beginning round. Baylor, Oklahoma State and Alabama all share the lead after each had an even-par showing on first day of competition at Olympia Fields Country Club.Â
"I'm really happy with the way we played today." Texas A&M head coach J.T. Higgins said. "It was tough conditions on a championship golf course. The guys battled hard all way through the round and we are one shot off the lead. We have a chance to compete and see how we do. We are in a great position. "
 Â
Sophomore Josh Gilege (66, -4) had a career-best round filling in for Cameron Champ who was scratched with back tightness. The sophomore carded a 66 and holds a share of second place individually, two back of leader Zach Bauchou of Oklahoma State.
Andrew Paysse (70, E) carded an even round which was good for a share of 14th in a crowded field. Chandler Phillips (72, +2), coming off his third career individual championship, shot two-over earning a share of 27th. Freshman Reese Ramsey (73, +3) is in a tie for 37th playing in his second event as an Aggie while sophomore Brandon Smith (74, +4) checks in at 45th.
"Obviously, the big story is Josh," added Higgins. "He didn't find out he needed to fill in until about an hour before tee time. He got ready and really took advantage of his opportunity. I'm proud of the way he stepped in. He played an outstanding round of golf today. Also, the other guys keeping it around par today puts us in a great position."
The team will get back out on the course for the second round on Saturday morning at 8:00 a.m. (CT), paired with USC and Florida State. Live scoring will be available at GolfStat.com. Stay tuned to 12thMan.com or follow the Aggies on Twitter (@AggieMensGolf).
