NAPA, Calif. – Texas A&M senior golfer Cameron Champ has received an invitation to play alongside the professionals of the PGA Tour at the Safeway Open presented by Chevron Oct. 2-8.
Â
Champ earned a sponsor's exemption for the event which will be held at Silverado Resort and Spa in Napa, Calif., near his hometown of Sacramento. The former top junior golfer in the state, Champ will be participating in his second PGA Tour event this year following a five-under par showing at the U.S. Open at Erin Hills, Wis., in June.
Â
A season ago, Champ put together one of best seasons in program history by maintaining a 71.50 scoring average during 34 rounds as a junior to garner third-team All-America honors from the Golf Coaches Association of America. He enjoyed one tournament title and five top-five finishes while posting a red-hot finish to the year with top-six finishes in five of his last seven events.
Â
Champ will miss a return to the site of the U.S. Open as he will not participate in the Aggies' upcoming action at the Erin Hills Intercollegiate, Oct. 1-3.
