TULSA, Okla. - Texas A&M Men's Tennis is set to kick off their first national championship tournament of the 2017-18 season in Tulsa, Okla. The Saint Francis Health System ITA Men's All-American Championship begins Saturday, Sept.30, and consists of the nation's top Division I men's tennis players.
The University of Tulsa is hosting the Saint Francis Health System ITA Men's All-American Championship for the 13th straight season, with matches taking place on the courts of the Michael D. Case Tennis Center. Qualifying singles and doubles will be held October 2-3, with main draw matches transpiring between October 5-9.
In addition to vying for the All-American national title, players will be competing to secure a berth into the 2017 Oracle ITA National Fall Championships, which takes place November 1-5, in Palm Desert, California. Singles quarterfinalists, consolation singles champion and finalist, along with doubles semifinalists and consolation doubles champion and finalist advance to the end of fall national championship.
The Texas A&M line-up at the tournament will consist of freshman Juan Carlos Aguilar and junior Kevin Lam in pre-qualifying singles, sophomore Valentin Vacherot in qualifying singles, and senior Jordi Arconada in the main draw. Aguilar and Arconada are set to compete in qualifying doubles.
Last season, Arconada competed in qualifying singles, making a three-round run defeating players from Tulane and Stanford, but came up short to Victor Pham from Columbia in the final round of the qualifying draw. Arconada also competed in qualifying doubles with AJ Catanzariti, making it to the third round after defeating duos from Denver and Kennesaw State in straight sets, before falling to Justin Butsch and Jordan Daigle of LSU.
Texas A&M is coming off a quality showing after only losing one match at the Napa Valley Tennis Classic in California earlier this month. No. 108 Catanzariti defeated No. 104 Alex Lebedev of Notre Dame 6-4, 6-7(8), 6-1; Akos Kotorman of Baylor 6-2, 4-6, 6-3; and Axel Nefve of USTA 3-6, 6-4, 6-2. Vacherot, who is ranked No. 93 in the nation, defeated Nathan Han of USTA 4-6, 6-0, 7-6(3); Jake DeVine of USC 6-1, 7-6(2); and Matt Gamble of Notre Dame in straight sets 6-1, 6-3, to round out a perfect weekend.
