Texas A&M Connections at Super Bowl LI
Jan 23, 2017 | Football
COLLEGE STATION—A Texas A&M football player is assured of winning another Super Bowl ring, as the Aggies are represented on both teams at Super Bowl LI.
New England Patriots tight end Martellus Bennett (No. 88) and Atlanta Falcons offensive tackle Jake Matthews (No. 70) will meet at NRG Stadium in Houston when the two teams play on Sunday, Feb. 5.
A three-year football letterman for Texas A&M (2005-07), Bennett earned first-team All-Big 12 honors as selected by The Dallas Morning News and was the leading receiver for the 2007 Aggie squad. He also earned a basketball letter in 2006 as the men's basketball team advanced to the second round of the NCAA Championships. Bennett, a prep All-American at Taylor High School (Alief, Texas), will be looking to match his brother's Super Bowl ring -- Michael Bennett earned his when the Seattle Seahawks won Super Bowl XLVIII in 2014.
Bennett was the first Aggie selected in the 2008 NFL draft, a second-round pick of the Dallas Cowboys. He is in his first season with the Patriots after spending time with the Cowboys, New York Giants and Chicago Bears.
A four-year Aggie letterman (2010-13), Matthews was a two-time All-America selection and was twice named to the All-SEC squad (2012, 2013). He earned the Jacobs Blocking Trophy as a senior, presented to the conference's top offensive lineman. In addition to his exploits on the playing field, Matthews earned his Aggie degree prior to his final collegiate football game and was named to the SEC Academic Honor roll.
Matthews was the sixth overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft, going to the Falcons as the first Aggie chosen that year. He is the son of NFL Hall of Famer Bruce Matthews, a longtime standout for the Houston Oilers and Tennessee Titans who played in Super Bowl XXXIV in 2000. That game was held in the Georgia Dome, Jake's home stadium.
The Elkins High School (Missouri City, Texas) product has two brothers with Aggie pedigrees. Older brother Kevin (2006-09) and younger brother Mike (2012-15). Kevin played parts of five seasons in the NFL with Tennessee, Washington and Carolina.
