HARTFORD, Wisc. – The top-ranked Texas A&M men's golf team opened play at the Marquette Intercollegiate on Sunday, ending the event's opening round in fourth place.
Â
Texas A&M (293, +5) trials leader South Florida (E) by five strokes with 36 holes remaining in the event. Marquette (+2) and UTEP (+3), meanwhile, round out the top three schools in the team standings.
Â
"We did not have our best stuff today," Texas A&M head coach J.T. Higgins said. "There were a lot of unforced errors and we really couldn't get any momentum going, especially on the green. That being said, the guys hung in there and left us in good position, only five back with two rounds to play."
Â
Freshman Reese Ramsey (71, -1) headlined the Aggie lineup during the tournament's 18 holes as he carded three birdies on the day to hold a tie for fourth place. The Austin, Texas, native stands just four shots back of Marquette's Austin Kendziorski, who tops the leaderboard at five-under par.
Â
Senior Andrew Paysse (72, E) also owns a spot in the top 10 with a share for 10th while Chandler Phillips (75, +3) and Josh Gliege (75, +3) sit in a tie for 28th. Brandon Smith (76, +4) rounded out the A&M contingency with a share of 37th.
Â
"I was really proud of Reese today," Higgins added. "He did a great job of scrambling and saving par all over the golf course. He put together a nice round on a championship venue. At a course like this, mistakes get amplified a bit so it keeps grinding and putting pressure on you. We're still learning, but I thought the guys did pretty good holding up to the adversity today."
Â
The tournament resumes Monday morning with the Aggies set to tee off at 9 a.m. (CT) alongside golfers from Marquette and Northwestern. Live scoring and results for the Aggies can be found on golfstat.com as well as live updates via twitter at @AggieMensGolf.
