TULSA, Okla. – Texas A&M men's tennis impressed at the Saint Francis Health System ITA Men's All-American Championship Pre-Qualifying Monday. The Maroon & White tallied four singles wins and a pair of doubles victories.
The University of Tulsa is hosting the Saint Francis Health System ITA Men's All-American Championship for the 13th straight season, with matches taking place on the courts of the Michael D. Case Tennis Center. Qualifying singles and doubles are set to conclude Tuesday, with main draw matches scheduled to begin Thursday.
Freshman Juan Carlos Aguilar won his fifth straight match in the Sooner State, defeating No. 70 Alberto Barroso-Campos of South Florida, 6-3, 7-5. The Bolivian picked up his first ranked win of his collegiate career and is two wins away from reaching the Main Draw. Aguilar will face Martin Joyce of Ohio State in Tuesday's qualifying draw second round.
No. 93 Valentin Vacherot joined Aguilar in the win column, topping Dominic West of New Mexico, 7-6(5), 6-4, to improve to 3-0 this fall, the Frenchman will take on Clement Marzol of South Alabama on Tuesday.
Aguilar and senior Jordi Arconada featured for the Maroon & White for the first time, the duo topped Ricky Hernandez Tong and Dominic West of New Mexico before earning their first ranked win as a pair after defeating No. 30 and second-seeded Alberto Barroso-Campos and Peter Bertran of South Florida in the second round. The Texas A&M pair are set to face off against Loic Cloes and Clement Marzol of South Alabama at 4:30 p.m.
Vacherot and junior Kevin Lam dropped a tough three-set match to Andy Andrade and Chase Perez-Blanco of Florida, 4-6, 6-1, 10-7.
In addition to vying for the All-American national title, players will be competing to secure a berth into the 2017 Oracle ITA National Fall Championships, which takes place November 1-5, in Palm Desert, California. Singles quarterfinalists, consolation singles champion and finalist, along with doubles semifinalists and consolation doubles champion and finalist advance to the end of fall national championship.
