TULSA, Okla. – Texas A&M men's tennis endured a rain soaked day of matches at the Saint Francis Health System ITA Men's All-American Championship Pre-Qualifying Tuesday. The Maroon & White saw both a singles player and a doubles team advance through the pre-qualifying draw to take part in Thursday's Main Draw.
The University of Tulsa is hosting the Saint Francis Health System ITA Men's All-American Championship for the 13th straight season, with matches taking place on the courts of the Michael D. Case Tennis Center. Qualifying singles and doubles are set to conclude Tuesday, with main draw matches scheduled to begin Thursday.
No. 93 Valentin Vacherot topped Clement Marzol of South Alabama, 6-3, 6-4, before outlasting JT Nishimura of Cal, 6-2, 4-6, 7-5, to advance to Thursday's main draw. The Frenchman has raced out to a 5-0 record this fall, his first as a collegiate player after enrolling at Texas A&M last January.
Senior Jordi Arconada and freshman Juan Carlos Aguilar overpowered Loic Cloes and Clement Marzol of South Alabama in the qualifying doubles final round to advance to the main draw. The duo improved to 3-0 together, including a top-50 win after beating No. 30 Alberto Barroso-Campos and Peter Bertran of South Florida on Monday.
Aguilar saw his single's run in Tulsa come to an end at the hands of Martin Joyce of Ohio State. The freshman ran his record to 6-2 this fall after sweeping through the pre-qualifying draw and topping No. 70 Alberto Barroso-Campos of South Florida in the first round of the qualifying draw on Monday.
In addition to vying for the All-American national title, players will be competing to secure a berth into the 2017 Oracle ITA National Fall Championships, which takes place November 1-5, in Palm Desert, California. Singles quarterfinalists, consolation singles champion and finalist, along with doubles semifinalists and consolation doubles champion and finalist advance to the end of fall national championship.
