Aguilar and Arconada Claim Top-5 Win at ITA All-American

TULSA, Okla. – Freshman Juan Carlos Aguilar and senior Jordi Arconada defeated No. 2 Robert Loeb and Jan Zielinski of Georgia in the Saint Francis Health System ITA Men's All-American Championship doubles first round Thursday afternoon. No. 36 Arconada advanced to Friday's second round in both doubles and singles action.

TULSA, Okla. – Freshman Juan Carlos Aguilar and senior Jordi Arconada defeated No. 2 Robert Loeb and Jan Zielinski of Georgia in the Saint Francis Health System ITA Men's All-American Championship doubles first round Thursday afternoon. No. 36 Arconada advanced to Friday's second round in both doubles and singles action.
 
The doubles victory for Aguilar and Arconada is the highest ranked win in each player's career. The pair advanced through the qualifying draw with three wins, including a triumph over South Florida's 30th ranked duo of Alberto Barroso-Campos and Peter Bertran. Thursday's win over Loeb and Zielinski came in three-sets; 6-3, 3-6, 10-3; to set up a showdown with Andy Andrade and Chase Perez-Blanco of Florida at 1:00 p.m.
 
"Today was an important win for Jordi and me," Aguilar said. "We played well in the important points. The difference in the match was how strong we were mentally."
 
No. 36 Arconada began the day with a 6-4, 6-4 win over No. 75 Logan Staggs of UCLA, the senior kicked off his final season in Aggieland with 11th ranked win of his career. Thursday's early matches were moved indoors due to rain in the Tulsa area. The Buenos Aires native, will take on No. 22 Harrison Scott of Texas at 9:00 a.m. Friday.
 
"I played a very solid match against a tough opponent that makes you compete at your best," Arconada said. "I felt comfortable playing indoors and am very happy to get my first win in my senior season against a tough competitor like Logan."
 
Sophomore Valentin Vacherot fell in three-sets to No. 51 Alex Knight of Michigan, the setback was the first of the season for the Frenchman. No. 93 Vacherot will look to get back into the win column in the consolation draw against No. 118 Constant De La Bassetiere of Penn State at 9:00 a.m.
 
The University of Tulsa is hosting the Saint Francis Health System ITA Men's All-American Championship for the 13th straight season, with matches taking place on the courts of the Michael D. Case Tennis Center.
 
In addition to vying for the All-American national title, players will be competing to secure a berth into the 2017 Oracle ITA National Fall Championships, which takes place November 1-5, in Palm Desert, California. Singles quarterfinalists, consolation singles champion and finalist, along with doubles semifinalists and consolation doubles champion and finalist advance to the end of fall national championship.
