TULSA, Okla. – Texas A&M men's tennis freshman Juan Carlos Aguilar and senior Jordi Arconada continued their impressive showing in the Saint Francis Health System ITA Men's All-American Championship doubles draw, Friday afternoon. The Maroon & White duo won their fourth straight match to advance to Saturday's quarterfinals.
Aguilar and Arconada ousted Andy Andrade and Chase Perez-Blanco of Florida in straight sets; 6-1, 7-6(6). The A&M pair have picked up ranked wins against No. 30 Alberto Barroso-Campos and Peter Bertran of South Florida and No. 2 Robert Loeb and Jan Zielinski of Georgia this week in Tulsa. Arconada and Aguilar are set to face off against No. 19 Will Little and Johannes Schretter of Baylor in Saturday's quarterfinals, the pair are the first Aggie duo to advance to the All-American Quarterfinals since Jeremy Efferding and Jordan Szabo made the semifinals in 2014.
No. 93 Valentin Vacherot bounced back from his first defeat of the 2017 season on Thursday by topping No. 118 Constant De La Bassetiere of Penn State; 6-3, 6-4; in the Consolation Draw first round. The Frenchman improved to 6-1 this fall with Friday's win, the right-hander will take on Giovanni Oradini of Mississippi State on Saturday.
No. 36 Jordi Arconada saw his run at the All-American come to an end as he fell to No. 22 Harrison Scott of Texas; 6-4, 2-6, 6-4.
The University of Tulsa is hosting the Saint Francis Health System ITA Men's All-American Championship for the 13th straight season, with matches taking place on the courts of the Michael D. Case Tennis Center.
In addition to vying for the All-American national title, players will be competing to secure a berth into the 2017 Oracle ITA National Fall Championships, which takes place November 1-5, in Palm Desert, California. Singles quarterfinalists, consolation singles champion and finalist, along with doubles semifinalists and consolation doubles champion and finalist advance to the end of fall national championship.
