FORT WORTH, Texas – Texas A&M went a combined 5-5 in singles matches and 1-0 in doubles on the first day of the ITA Texas Regional Championship, presented by Oracle, at TCU's Bayard H Friedman Tennis Center.

"Overall we had a productive day," Texas A&M head coach Mark Weaver said. "We had some ups and downs, but we are definitely learning some things and figuring out some things and making forward progress. That is ultimately our goal each and every day, to learn and get better and continue on with the process throughout the season."

Freshmen Dorthea Faa-Hviding and Riley McQuaid got the Aggies started with an 8-4 doubles victory over Julia Navajo and Ana Perez of Texas State. A&M's other two doubles teams, 29th-ranked Domenica Gonzalez and Eva Paalma, who are the No. 2 seed in the 64-team doubles draw, and Iulia Ivascu and Macarena Olivares, received first-round byes and will begin doubles action Saturday morning.

In singles, Olivares and McQuaid each won their first two rounds of matches to advance to the round of 32. Olivares held off Sarai Monarrez of SMU, 6-0, 6-7 (5), 6-2, to advance to the second round and then crushed Flavia Gutierrez of Texas State, 6-0, 6-0, to reach the round of 32. The senior will face No. 15 seed Jessica Hinojosa Gomez of Baylor at noon on Saturday.

McQuaid topped Ana Glumac of Houston, 6-2, 6-3, in the opening round and then defeated Klara Mrcela of UT-Arlington, 6-0, 6-1, in the round of 64 to advance. McQuaid will face No. 11 seed Anna Turati of Texas on Saturday at noon.

Paalma, a senior making her first appearance of the fall season, also won her first-round match as A&M won three of five matches in the 128-player first round. Paalma defeated Tyler Duncum of Texas, 6-0, 6-2, but then suffered a 7-5, 6-1 loss to No. 9 seed Liza Buss of SMU in the round of 64.

Margo Taylor, who drew a bye in the first round, also was eliminated in the second round after falling to Alex Jones of Texas State, 7-5, 7-6 (4).

Ivascu and Faa-Hviding both suffered first-round losses in the singles main draw. Ivascu fell to Lauren Alter of Houston, 6-0, 6-2, and then fell in the first round of consolations, dropping a 6-1, 6-3 decision to Whitney Williams of Abilene Christian.

Faa-Hviding fell to Minying Liang of North Texas, 1-6, 6-1, 6-2. Faa-Hviding received a bye in the first two rounds of the consolation draw and will face Anzhelika Shapovalova of SMU in the round of 32 on Saturday at 4 p.m.
