Texas A&M Doubles Team Wins Two on Second Day of ITA Regional
Oct 14, 2017 | Women's Tennis
FORT WORTH, Texas – The Texas A&M doubles team of Domenica Gonzalez and Eva Paalma won two matches today to highlight the Aggies' second day at the ITA Texas Regional Championship, presented by Oracle, at TCU's Bayard H Friedman Tennis Center.
The Aggie duo, ranked 29th in the ITA preseason rankings and the No. 2 seed in the tournament's 64-team field, opened the day's action with an 8-3 victory over Victoria Kareh and Matea Zemunik of Incarnate Word in the round of 32. Gonzalez and Paalma returned to the courts shortly thereafter and defeated Lucile Pothier and Whitney Williams of Abilene Christian, 8-5, in the round of 16 to advance to the quarterfinals.
Gonzalez and Paalma will face Sarai Monarrez and Ana Luisa Perez Lopez of SMU, Sunday at 8:30 a.m.
"I'm very pleased with Eva and Domenica," A&M coach Mark Weaver said. "They both have been on a limited practice schedule as of late and are overcoming some injuries, but they are pushing through and playing some good tennis."
A&M's other two doubles teams were unable to advance as they both were eliminated in the round of 32. Marta Perez Mur and Dani Wagland of Texas topped A&M's freshman pair of Dorthea Faa-Hviding and Riley McQuaid, 8-4, and the Aggie tandem of Iulia Ivascu and Macarena Olivares suffered an 8-5 setback to Lindsey Hodge and Wendy Zhang of Rice.
Ivascu and Olivares will play in the doubles consolation and will take on Jessica Hinojosa Gomez and Livia Kraus of Baylor in the round of 16 at 10 a.m. on Sunday
A&M was eliminated from the singles main draw as McQuaid and Olivares both suffered straight-set losses to seeded players in the round of 32. McQuaid went up against No. 1 seed and 125th-ranked Anna Turati of Texas and lost, 6-0, 6-0. Olivares fell to Hinojosa Gomez, the No. 15 seed, 7-5, 6-2,
In the singles consolation, A&M's Dorthea Faa-Hviding had a bye and a walkover and will play Momoka Horiguchi of UT-Arlington in the round of 16 tomorrow at 11:30 a.m. Aggie redshirt sophomore Margo Taylor was eliminated in the round of 64 today after suffering a 3-6, 6-2, 10-6 loss to Jordan Henry of Abilene Christian.
"We have learned a lot from both the singles and the doubles from all of the matches that we have played and the competition will ultimately help us as the fall season continues on," Weaver added.
