FORT WORTH, Texas – Texas A&M freshman Dorthea Faa-Hviding fought back to win two matches today to advance to the singles consolation semifinals at the ITA Texas Regional Championship, presented by Oracle, at TCU's Bayard H Friedman Tennis Center.
Faa-Hviding began the day with a 2-6, 6-2, 13-11 victory over Momoka Horiguchi of UT-Arlington in the consolation round of 16. Faa-Hviding then returned to the courts and posted another come-from-behind victory, defeating Sarah Adams of Abilene Christian, 4-6, 6-4, 10-5, in the quarterfinals.
Faa-Hviding will face Savannah Durkin of Rice in a semifinal match at 10 a.m. on Monday, with the winner advancing to the finals to take on the winner between Matea Zemunik of Incarnate Word and Livia Kraus of Baylor.
"Dorthea is getting better match by match and has come up with some of her best tennis when the matches have been on the line," A&M coach Mark Weaver said. "She is gaining a lot of experience with these matches and learning what works and what doesn't."
The Aggies didn't fare as well in doubles matches today.
Domenica Gonzalez and Eva Paalma's run in the doubles main draw came to an end in the quarterfinals today as the No. 2-seeded Aggie duo, fell to Sarai Monarrez and Ana Luisa Perez Lopez of SMU, 8-5. Also the A&M doubles team of Iulia Ivascu and Macarena Olivares was eliminated in the doubles consolation after falling to Jessica Hinojosa Gomez and Livia Kraus of Baylor, 8-6, in the round of 16.
"Overall we have assessed and learned much as a group," Weaver said, "and are looking forward to getting back to work and improve as a whole."
