Alpharetta, Ga. – The top-ranked Texas A&M men's golf team opened play at the Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate on Friday, ending the event's first round in a tie for 12th place.
Â
"Obviously, not the start we wanted but at the same time we battled back really well at the end of the round to keep ourselves in contention," Texas A&M head coach J.T. Higgins said. "We've got a lot of work to do. There are a lot of good teams in front of us and strokes to make up, but nobody gets a trophy after the first round."
Â
Junior Chandler Phillips carded a round of three-under par (69) on Friday to stand out as the highest-ranking Aggie on the leaderboard in a tie for 12th. Senior Andrew Paysse was also under par with a round of 71 (-1), leaving the Temple, Texas, native with a share of 25th place.
Â
In his first action for the Maroon & White this season, senior Cameron Champ (72) was at even par to conclude the round in 38th, while Josh Gliege (+4) and Brandon Smith (+8) rounded out the Aggie lineup.
Â
"We need to battle back and stick to the game plan in these next two round and try to cut that lead in half going into the final round," Higgins added. "If we can do that we'll be in great position."
Â
The tournament resumes Saturday morning with the Aggies set to tee off at 10:50 a.m. (CT) alongside golfers from Clemson and Oklahoma. Live scoring and results for the Aggies can be found on golfstat.com as well as live updates via twitter at @AggieMensGolf.
