Farmers Fight off Late Plowboys Charge to Win 6-4

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The Plowboys made a late run, but they came up short as the Farmers posted a 6-4 win in the second game of the Omaha Cup Championship Series on Olsen Field at Blue Bell Park Friday evening.

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The Plowboys made a late run, but they came up short as the Farmers posted a 6-4 win in the second game of the Omaha Cup Championship Series on Olsen Field at Blue Bell Park Friday evening.
 
Allonte Wingate batted 3-for-4 with one triple, one run and two RBI to lead the Farmers. Cole Bedford was 2-for-4 with one walk, one triple, one run and two RBI. Other notables for the Farmers included sophomores Braden Shewmake and Hunter Coleman. Shewmake batted 2-for-4 with one walk, one triple and one run and Coleman hit 2-for-4 with one stolen base, one run and two RBI.
 
The Farmers opened the scoring in the fifth inning. With one out, Bedford singled to leftfield and Jorge Gutierrez drew a walk. Baine Schoenvogel broke the scoring seal with a double to right-center to knock in Bedford and, with the infield drawn in, Wingate punched a single up the middle, driving in two for the 3-0 lead.
 
Two triples helped the Farmers put two more runs on the board in the sixth. Shewmake started the rally with a one-out triple and scored on Coleman's single up the middle. With two outs, Bedford tripled to rightfield, pushing Shewmake across for the 5-0 margin.
 
The Plowboys scored in the home half of the sixth thanks to a Farmers' error. Chris Andritsos singled with one out and moved to second on passed ball. He came around to score when first baseman Will Frizzell was unable to glove a throw from third baseman Wingate on George Janca's grounder.
 
The Farmers' lead was trimmed to one run in the eighth. Chandler Morris started the frame with a walk and with one out Janca singled to left-center to put runners on the corners. Aaron Walters dropped a double on the leftfield line to knock in one run and Cole Taylor gapped a double to left-center knocking in two and cutting the gap to 5-4.
 
The Farmers tacked on an insurance run in the top of the ninth. Wingate started the inning with a single and scored on a sacrifice fly by Coleman.
 
The Plowboys threatened in the second inning, but Schoenvogel gunned down Janca at the plate from rightfield on Bryce Blaum's single, ending the frame.
 
Mitchell Kilkenny worked 4.2 scoreless innings for the Farmers, scattering three hits and two walks while striking out three.
 
The Farmers took a 2-0 lead in the best-of-five series with game three scheduled for Wednesday at 3:05 p.m.
