COLLEGE STATION – The Texas A&M University System Board of Regents, Chancellor John Sharp, Texas A&M University President Michael K. Young and Director of Athletics Scott Woodward will usher in a new era of Texas A&M Athletics with a milestone celebration of the Softball Stadium and Track & Field Stadium this Friday, October 6, at 10 a.m. Central Time.
Â
The ceremony will take place at the West Campus Player Development Center as Hall of Fame head coaches Jo Evans (softball) and Pat Henry (track & field) will be in attendance.
Â
Construction on the projects, which were approved in the May 2016 meeting of the Texas A&M University System Board of Regents, has begun with a scheduled completion date of March 2018 for the Softball Stadium and August 2018 for the Track & Field Stadium.
Â
The $28.6 million Softball Stadium will resemble Blue Bell Park, home of Texas A&M's baseball team, and will hold approximately 2,000 fans. The stadium will include club level seating as well as two luxury suites, and the new press box will feature two radio booths, a TV booth and a writing press area.
Designs for the new track and field facility, which will be a 90,500 square foot complex, includes a nine-lane sprint and hurdle straightaway down the middle of an Olympic standard nine-lane running oval along with dual field event area. Longer throwing events will utilize the grass infield of the current training facility.
Â
The new stadium will have an initial seating capacity of nearly 2,200, complete with hospitality amenities, press box, full broadcast capabilities and service areas. It will also house team meeting rooms, locker rooms, a training room, officials' quarters and equipment storage.
