BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Texas A&M quarterback Nick Starkel was named Freshman of the Week by the Southeastern Conference on Monday for his record-setting performance in the Aggies' 55-14 win over New Mexico at Kyle Field on Saturday.
Additionally, Starkel was also named one of eight "Stars of the Week" by the Manning Award.
Starkel, a redshirt freshman from Argyle, Texas, torched the Lobos for 416 passing yards and four touchdowns on 21-of-30 pass attempts -- all in the first half – in his first start since breaking his ankle in the season-opener vs. UCLA. It marked the first time that a Texas A&M quarterback reached the 400-yard plateau in passing in the first half in school history.
It was the second 400-yard passing game by a freshman in school history and the second-most by a freshman behind Johnny Manziel's 453-yard outburst vs. Arkansas in his Heisman Trophy-winning season in 2012. Starkel's 416 passing yards rank ninth on the overall school list.
Starkel's four passing TDs matched the freshman school record shared by five other QBs -- Manziel, Kyle Allen (twice), Reggie McNeal, Kevin Murray and Jeff Granger. Starkel led the Aggies on touchdown drives on each of the first six offensive series of the game and has now produced a touchdown on 14 of his 29 drives in 2017.
