No. 20 Women's Basketball Defeats Oklahoma City 86-35 In Exhibition
Nov 06, 2017 | Women's Basketball
COLLEGE STATION- No. 20 Texas A&M picked up its 10th straight exhibition win with an 86-35 victory over defending NAIA National Champion Oklahoma City on Monday at Reed Arena. Four Aggies, including two freshmen, scored in double figures.
Junior Danni Williams, who scored 19 points in last season's exhibition, scored 18 on Monday to lead all scorers. Freshman Chennedy Carter, in her first appearance at Reed Arena, had 15 points to go with a game-high seven assists and no turnovers. Senior Khaalia Hillsman added 16 and freshman Kayla Wells added 12.
The Aggies took control of the game with a 19-0 run to close the first quarter, taking a 25-9 lead after one and a 50-19 lead by halftime. The Maroon & White's 86 points are the most for A&M in an exhibition since 2013.
The Aggies open the 2017-18 regular season on Friday, November 10 at 7 p.m. against Houston in the first round of the Preseason WNIT.
TEXAS A&M HEAD COACH GARY BLAIR
Lulu McKinney backing up Chennedy Carter on the guard this year…
It gives us a lot of options. She [Chennedy] hits those two 3-pointers and I was pleased with her. Lulu is a very steady person with our offense. She knows the offense very well and is a great teammate. She understands that she has been a two-year starter at UTEP and she is exactly what we need to come in and back up Chennedy. Against some really good competition, Chennedy can get into foul trouble.
On the rebounding tonight…
I think they will be better than that when we play Howard more than 19 minutes. So, if she would have played her normal 30 minutes, she is going to have 15 or so and Khaalia only played 17 minutes so I think the rebound will go up. Our freshman missed some opportunities but I just have to find the right chemistry. We are very comfortable with Lumpkin right now but she still has to do more and score for us. Rebounding we just have to better at.
TEXAS A&M JUNIOR GUARD DANNI WILLIAMS
On how they played tonight …
We built some team chemistry on the floor, four of us played together a lot last year. Bring in Chennedy Carter brought a different style than [Curtyce Knox.] Being able to run with her in a game setting, besides the foreign trip, was really good for us and it let our younger teammates see our style of play.
On defense getting better…
Yes I worked on it, but I have to give credit to our new strength and conditioning coach Kayln Sticher. She has opened up my hips, stretching wise, so that's making me quicker. It's all about being in the right spot, coach has really emphasized that.
TEXAS A&M JUNIOR FORWARD ANRIEL HOWARD
On her effort tonight…
I think I had effort, I just wasn't making my shots. I just have to keep going to the gym and working on my finishing.
