COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Texas A&M senior midfielder Stephanie Malherbe was named to the United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division I Women's Scholar All-West Region Second Team, the organization formerly known as the National Soccer Coaches Association of America announced Tuesday.
Malherbe, who is slated to graduate in May 2019, owns a 3.63 GPA in Accounting.
Starting all 22 matches, Malherbe led the Aggies in minutes for a field player, logging 2,013 minutes. The senior helped the Aggies win 14 games in a row, a school record, and was part of a defense that didn't allow a multi-goal game throughout SEC play.
Her 2017 effort earned Malherbe United Soccer Coaches All-Southeast Region Third Team recognition.
Malherbe has 87 Aggie caps for her career, including 65 starts. She logged 15 points on four goals and seven assists.
An Olympian, Malherbe played for South Africa at the 2016 Rio Games. During her stint she performed valiantly in a 1-0 loss to the USA in a warmup match and then played all 270 minutes in the Olympics, including a 0-0 draw against host Brazil.
This season, the Aggies took home their third SEC Tournament title, earning their 23rd consecutive bid to the NCAA Championship to become one of five teams to make it to every NCAA tournament since 1995. With a first round win over Lamar, the Maroon and White advanced to the second round for the 20th straight season. The Aggies finished with an .864 winning percentage, topping the .857 mark (18-3) from 1997 and the .852 tally (22-3-2) from 2014.
To be eligible for selection, the student athlete must meet the following criteria: have at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) throughout her career, start more than 50 percent of all games and be an elite player as supported by playing honors (i.e., all-conference) or contributions to the success of his/her team, and be a junior or above in academic standing at the current institution.
