COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The 22nd-ranked Texas A&M women's tennis team returns to action Friday as the Aggies play host to SMU at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center. First serve is at 4 p.m., and all fans with a valid Texas A&M student ID will be admitted free.
"It has been almost three weeks since we have competed on our home courts, and we are looking forward to playing against SMU on Friday," Texas A&M head coach Mark Weaver said. "This match along with another home match next Tuesday against TCU will help prepare us for the very challenging SEC schedule, which is just around the corner."
The Aggies (6-3), who begin their Southeastern Conference slate against No. 21 South Carolina on Friday, March 3, have not played since Feb. 12, when they completed competition in the ITA National Team Indoor Championship with a 4-2 loss to 13th-ranked Michigan. A&M went 1-2 overall in the prestigious tournament, falling to No. 3 Pepperdine, 4-2, in the opener and then upsetting No. 10 Duke, 4-3, to mark the Aggies' first-ever victory against the perpetually high-ranked Blue Devils. It also was A&M's second win against a top 15 team this season.
SMU (6-1) has not played since Feb. 19, when the Mustangs had their season-opening six-match win streak snapped with a 7-0 loss at Oklahoma. Texas A&M will be the first ranked opponent SMU has faced this season.
Individually, No. 45 Rachel Pierson is the Aggies' highest ranked singles player. The senior is a team-leading 16-5 in all matches, and she is tied with junior Macarena Olivares for most wins in dual matches only with a 6-2 record, all played at the No. 1 line. Senior Rutuja Bhosale, 11-6 overall and 5-3 in dual matches only, is No. 75 in the national singles rankings. She and Pierson are No. 14 in the national doubles rankings with a 16-4 overall record, including a 5-2 ledger at the No. 1 line.
Senior Dasha Sharapova leads the Mustangs with a 6-1 singles record in dual matches, and Lisa Buss, a sophomore transfer from Iowa State, is 5-1, all at the No. 1 line. In doubles, Sarai Monarrez Yesaki and Ana Perez-Lopez are 3-0 in dual matches, all at the No. 2 line where SMU is 6-0 this season.
SMU has won the last two meetings against the Aggies and holds a 16-11 lead—including a 7-6 edge in matches played in College Station—in the all-time series which began in 1980. The former Southwest Conference foes last met May 12, 2011, in the first round of the NCAA Championship. The Mustangs won the last singles match standing to defeat the Aggies, 4-3, at the Mitchell Tennis Center.
Texas A&M's most recent victory against the Mustangs was May 16, 2004. The Aggies defeated SMU, 4-0, in the NCAA second round at the Mitchell Tennis Center to record their fifth consecutive win against the Mustangs and advance to the NCAA round of 16 for the first time in program history.
The match against the Mustangs marks the start of a season-high four-match homestand for the Aggies, who close out the preconference schedule Tuesday, Feb. 28 against No. 15 TCU. Texas A&M then opens SEC action on Friday, March 3 against No. 21 South Carolina and wraps up the homestand against No.-1 ranked and defending SEC champion Florida on Sunday, March 5.
