Texas A&M Outlasts TCU, Wins 4-3
Feb 28, 2017 | Women's Tennis
COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The No. 20 Texas A&M women's tennis team outlasted a pesky No. 22 TCU squad Tuesday afternoon at the George P Mitchell Tennis Center in College Station. The Aggies improved to 8-3 on the season with the 4-3 victory over the Horned Frogs (6-3).
"Very, very exciting match to say the least," Texas A&M women's tennis head coach Mark Weaver said. "I can't remember one that was quite that exciting, maybe the Stanford match to end the season last year kind of had the same feel. Luckily this one went our way this time. We definitely had some opportunities and could have closed the door on the earlier, but the good news is that all of the players are out there fighting and playing hard. Playing as hard as they did it gave us an opportunity to win on every court. When you are playing a strong team like TCU, as long as everybody shows up on every court you are going to give yourself a chance to win."
In a flurry of activity to conclude the match, TCU claimed two of the final three matches on the court, but Texas A&M's Saska Gavrilovska clinched the match with a 2-6, 7-6(7), 6-3 victory over Marie Norris on court four. The final three matches finished in a matter of minutes as No. 94 Seda Arantekin topped No. 45 Rachel Pierson 7-6(4), 5-7, 6-3 on court one and Olaya Garrido-Reyes bested Macarena Olivares 0-6, 7-6(5), 7-6(5) on court three before Gavrilovska's heroics.
"There are not too many matches that finish that quickly at the end, I think the new scoring system with the no-ads contributes to that and we will start seeing more and more of that," Weaver added. "There are so many momentum swings in the no-ad scoring, the doubles are over in a flash and then the singles the momentum swings so fast. There are so many deuces games and they tend to half go your way and half go the other way. Saska pulled it away in the deciding match, she started out real slow and just kind of scraped and clawed her way to the end. She got better and better as the match went on and was able to slam the door shoot for us tonight."
In what proved to be the difference, the Maroon & White opened the match taking the doubles point. No. 10 Garrido-Rivas and Donika Boshota topped No. 14 Pierson and Rutuja Bhosale 6-1 on court one. Eva Paalma and Domenica Gonzalez defeated Arantekin and Carolina Wegner on the second court, 6-2, and Stefania Hristov and Olivares clinched the point with a 6-3 triumph over Alexandra Zenovka and Alexis Pereira on the third court.
"The doubles point was key and probably every match out on the courts today could have gone either way depending on who won the big points," Weaver said. "Fortunately we were able to pull it away there at the end."
TCU evened the match to open singles play as Sofiko Kadzhaya topped Hristov, 6-2, 6-1, on court six. The Aggies took a commanding 3-1 advantage through victories from No. 75 Bhosale over Bashota, 6-4, 6-3, on court two and Gonzalez's 6-4, 6-0 win on court five over Wegner.
Tuesday's match against the Horned Frogs marked the first of six consecutive matches against ranked opponents for the Aggies, who open Southeastern Conference with a home weekend series against No. 19 South Carolina on Friday, March 3 and defending SEC champion and No. 1-ranked Florida on Sunday, March 5. All fans with a valid Texas A&M student ID will be admitted free to all Aggie home matches.
