
Women's Tennis Faces No. 15 Baylor in Waco

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The 20th-ranked Texas A&M women's tennis team takes a break from Southeastern Conference play on Wednesday to battle 15th-ranked Baylor in in a top-20 showdown in Waco. First serve is slated for 5 p.m. at the Hurd Tennis Center.
The Aggies, who have won the last nine meetings against their former Big 12 and Southwest Conference foe, are 10-7 on the season, including 5-5 against ranked opponents after snapping a four-match losing skid with victories against No. 5 Auburn and No. 44 Alabama last weekend. The win against Auburn marked the second highest ranked home win in school history, and it tied for the fourth highest ranked victory all-time.
Baylor, 4-3 against ranked opponents, is 12-4 overall and also is riding a two-match winning streak after defeating No. 32 USC, 4-1, on Friday at Indian Wells, California.
"Baylor is having its best season in several years and has had a handful of very good wins," Texas A&M head coach Mark Weaver said. "We have played them several times over the last few years and know most of their players quite well. As always, it will be a hotly contested match. We played extremely well over the weekend, and we are looking forward to continuing to improve and get better in the final stretch of our regular-season play."
The Aggies are led by senior Rachel Pierson, who is a season-high No. 39 in the ITA national singles rankings with a team-leading 19-9 mark overall. Senior Rutuja Bhosale is No. 91 in singles and leads the Aggies with a 10-5 mark in dual matches only, all at the No. 2 line, and junior Tina Bokhua sports a team-best three-match win streak.
Bhosale and Pierson are No. 12 in doubles, marking the highest ranking the duo has ever received. The tandem is 20-6 overall, including 9-4 in dual matches, all at the No. 1 line. They are 6-4 against nationally ranked opponents and are riding a three-match win streak.
Baylor senior Blair Shankle is No. 4 in singles, tying the program record for the highest singles ranking all-time. She is 4-3 against ranked opponents and leads the Bears with an 18-3 overall record. Shankle, who enters the match against the Aggies riding a team-best three-match win streak, is 8-1 in dual matches only, all at the No. 1 line.
Shankle and partner Elizabeth Profit are ranked 32nd in doubles but have dropped their last three decisions to fall to 8-6 overall, including 1-4 in dual matches.
Texas A&M leads Baylor, 29-20 in the all-time series, which dates back to 1980. The Aggies also hold a 13-9 edge in matches played in Waco. Last year, the Aggies extended their winning streak against the Bears to nine, defeating Baylor, 4-0, in Waco, and 4-2 in College Station. Baylor, the Big 12 champion in three of the last four years, last defeated A&M on April 5, 2012, in Waco.
Following the match at Baylor, A&M continues its four-match road swing and returns to SEC play on Saturday as the Aggies take on No. 28 LSU in Baton Rouge.
