COLUMBIA, Mo. – Texas A&M junior diver Tyler Henschel broke the platform dive school record twice on his way to victory at the NCAA Zone D Diving Championships on Wednesday at the Mizzou Aquatic Center.
Henschel, who had already gained his berth to the national meet, out-classed the star-studded field in the platform dive at the zone qualifying meet. Henschel, from Sherwood Park, Alberta, Canada, posted a 12-dive score of 934.90, which was nearly 100 points ahead of the runner-up finisher. Among the divers trailing Henschel on this day were 2017 SEC Diver of the Meet Juan Hernandez of LSU and Big 12 platform champion Jacob Cornish of Texas.
Henschel took down the old school record in the preliminary round with a score of 466.60 and then bettered it with a score of 468.30 in the finals. Henschel's record-setting performance eclipsed the old record of 452.35 set by Grant Nel at the 2011 NCAA Championships in Minneapolis, Minn.
The Texas A&M men's team will seek its second straight top 25 national finish at the 2017 NCAA Men's Swimming & Diving Championships March 22-25 at the IUPUI Natatorium in Indianapolis, Ind.
