Men's Golf Concludes Play at Tiger Classic
Apr 13, 2017 | Men's Golf
BATON ROUGE, La. – Junior Cameron Champ finished in third place individually as the Texas A&M men's golf team wrapped up its regular season Thursday with a fourth-place showing at the Tiger Classic.
Champ (-4) shot both rounds of the one-day event under par, including an opening-round 69. His four-under performance trailed only a pair of LSU golfers, champion Nathan Jeansonne and runner-up Luis Gagne. The showing marked Champ's second straight top-three finish and his third of the season. He has played his last six rounds under par.
"Champ played great," Texas A&M head coach J.T. Higgins said. "He was calm and cool all day. He stuck to his game plan and really played with poise. He really has played great this spring."
As a team, the Aggies finished in fourth among the seven-team field. They shot an opening-round 303 on the par-72, 7,419-yard University Club course before wrapping up with a 299. Tournament host LSU won the Classic with a 6-over score across the 36 holes.
"Not sure if this is what I had envisioned when I signed us up for this tourney, but I do think it will be good for us moving forward," Higgin added. "It exposed some areas we need improvement and the boys got a taste of how courses are set up for championships. This was as good of prep as we could have asked for heading into the postseason. "
In the 44-player field, Aggie junior Andrew Paysse (+9) held a share of 15th finishing with a final-round 75. First-year Aggie Josh Gliege (+11) sat two strokes back of Paysse in a tie for 21st. Sophomore Chandler Phillips (+12) carded a 78 in both rounds to wrap up play in 23rd while fellow sophomore Brandon Smith (+15) finished in a tie for 27th.
Up next for the Aggies is the 2017 SEC Men's Golf Championships which will take place at the Sea Island Golf Club at St. Simons Island, Ga., April 21-24.
