Jun 19, 2017 | Women's Tennis
Former Aggie women's tennis player and recent Texas A&M graduate Rutuja Bhosale won the singles title in her first professional tournament following her four-year collegiate career.
Competing in the at the ITF $15,000 Aurangabad held earlier this month in Aurangabad, India, Bhosale won the 32-player singles main draw and reached the finals of the 16-team doubles draw with partner Kanika Vaidya, also of India.
Bhosale, from Pune, India, won four of her five singles matches in straight sets, including a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Mahak Jain of India in the finals.
In doubles, Bhosale and Vaidya narrowly won their opening match, upsetting No. 2 seed Nidhi Chilumula and Shweta Chandra Rana, 3-6, 6-3, 11-9, in the round of 16. Bhosale and Vaidya won their next two matches in straight sets, including a 6-1, 6-2 victory over No. 4 seed Manisha Foster of Great Britain and Alexandra Walters of Australia to reach the finals. In the championship match, the unseeded duo from India won the first set before falling to Pranjala Yadlapalli of India and Xiaoxi Zhao of China, 2-6, 6-3, 10-4.
Bhosale capped her Aggie career by becoming Texas A&M's first-ever All-American in doubles along with partner Rachel Pierson, having received a No. 5-8 seed in the 32-team NCAA Doubles Championship field. Only the third doubles team in A&M history to ever reach the NCAA round of 16, they came up just short of becoming the program's first duo to ever reach the quarterfinals. The pair was No. 9 in the final ITA doubles rankings, marking the highest final ranking in program history.
Bhosale, a three-time selection to the All-SEC Second Team, finished her career with a 91-40 doubles record, ranking ninth in the A&M records for most wins. She went 78-50 in singles, having competed in the NCAA Singles Championships for the first time as a senior.
