Aggie Men’s Tennis Opens Fall Schedule in Napa
Sep 14, 2017 | Men's Tennis
ST HELENA, California – The Texas A&M men's tennis team is set to begin the 2017-18 season at the Napa Valley Tennis Classic at the Meadowood Resort in St. Helena, Ca. Friday afternoon. In addition to the Maroon & White, the Napa Valley showdown is set to feature players from Baylor, North Carolina, Southern Cal, Tulsa and host-school Cal along with 8 USTA junior players as competition will last through Sunday.
Singles play will consist of eight groups of four players (three college players and one junior) playing a round robin of one match per day beginning Friday morning. Group winners will be entered in an eight man tie-breaker shootout draw on Sunday. The Shootout winner will receive a main draw Napa Valley Challenger wild card entry. Additionally, each player will compete in two double matches, one match each day on Friday and Saturday.
The Napa Valley Classic was founded as a collaborative effort on the part of Cal-Berkeley Head Coach Peter Wright and Meadowood Tennis Pro Doug King to bring exciting, top-rated tennis to the Napa Valley.
The quartet of Aggies slated to play in the Golden State are seniors AJ Catanzariti and Jordi Arconada, sophomore Valentin Vacherot and freshman Juan Carlos Aguilar. Arconada earned the No. 36 ranking in Wednesday's initial Oracle ITA Division I Men's Singles Rankings after going 22-6 last season, including a 10-0 mark in SEC play and a 7-2 record against ranked foes. No. 93 Vacherot and No. 108 Catanzariti joined Arconada in the initial ranking. Vacherot matched Arconada with 19 dual victories to pace the Aggies last year, while Catanzariti leads the current squad with 70 career dual victories. Aguilar will make his first appearance in the Maroon & White after an impressive prep career, including winning the Junior US Open doubles championship in 2016
The Aggies are looking forward to another successful year after the team finished the 2016-17 season ranked No. 14 in the ITA poll and advancing to the Round of 16 in Athens. The Maroon & White return to the courts this fall with an impressive slate of tournaments including the ITA All-American in Tulsa and ITA Indoor Championships in New York.
