COLLEGE STATION, Texas — Former Texas A&M All-American men's tennis player Shane Vinsant has been named the volunteer coach for the Aggie women's tennis team, women's head coach Mark Weaver announced.
Â
"We are very excited to announce that Shane Vinsant will serve as our volunteer assistant coach for the 2018 season," Weaver said. "Shane had an amazing playing career at Texas A&M, being a two-time All American and winning at the highest levels of college tennis in both singles and doubles. It is really special to now have three Aggies coaching our tennis team."
Â
Vinsant, who earned All-American status in doubles as a junior in 2015 and in singles following his 2014 sophomore campaign, completes an All-Aggie staff. He joins Weaver, who competed for Texas A&M from 1990-94, and former teammate Jordan Szabo, who played for the Aggies from 2012-15 and was named assistant coach of the women's team last summer.
Â
Vinsant, who was No. 19 in the junior world rankings, helped the Aggie men win two Southeastern Conference tournament championships (2014, 2015) and one regular season championship (2014), as well as the 2013 SEC Western Division title in Texas A&M's inaugural season in the league during his four-year career. The Aggies also advanced to the NCAA Championship every year of his career, reaching the Elite Eight for only the second time in program history in 2015 and finishing the season with a program-best No. 5 ranking in the final Oracle/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) poll.
Â
Vinsant posted a 99-48 singles record while leading the Maroon and White to a 95-35 team record from 2013-16. He earned All-SEC accolades all four years and was a two-time participant in the NCAA Singles Championship. The Keller, Texas, native garnered All-America honors in singles by reaching the NCAA Round of 16 as a sophomore. As a senior, Vinsant reached the second round after posting his highest ranked win of 2016, a 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 victory over seventh-ranked Christopher Eubanks of Georgia Tech in the opening round. He was ranked in every singles and doubles poll as a senior and finished his career No. 44 in singles and No. 68 in doubles with partner Arthur Rinderknech.
Â
Vinsant posted a 98-52 career record in doubles and earned All-America honors with partner Harrison Adams in 2015 as the duo finished No. 10 in the final ITA doubles rankings. The pair went 12-5 against ranked opponents, including 4-1 against top-five tandems. Vinsant and Adams competed in the NCAA Doubles Championship in Waco, Texas, where they fell to eighth-ranked Diego Galeano and Julian Lenz of Baylor in the first round.
Â
Vinsant played on the professional circuit following his graduation from A&M in 2016 with a degree in finance. He won two doubles titles and made a singles final and reached a career-high No. 657 ranking on the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) world singles tour and No. 637 on the ATP world doubles tour.
Â
The Aggie women's team is 2-0 after opening the 2018 season last weekend with 7-0 victories over both the University of Texas-Rio Grande Valley and Prairie View A&M. The team returns to the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center on Friday, January 26, to play host to Texas State and Sam Houston State in a doubleheader beginning at noon.
Â
General admission seating is free at all regular-season men's and women's home matches this season.
