TUCSON, Ariz. – Darkness halted play during the second round of the Arizona Intercollegiate Monday with Texas A&M standing in second place on the 18-team leaderboard.
The Aggies (+21) carded a 23-over par opening round while battling difficult conditions before showing marked improvement during their second turn around Sewailo Golf Club. Through 12 holes of its afternoon round, A&M was two-under par.
"The first round was really difficult, the wind was blowing as hard as we'd seen it in a long time," Texas A&M head coach J.T. Higgins said. "You combined that with it being our first competitive round of the spring, we looked a little rusty which led to some really high scores. That's not an excuse, because we're better than that and we're going to tighten it up tomorrow to put a good score on the board."
Baylor paces the field at 16-over par while tournament-host Arizona (+24), New Mexico (+26) and St. Mary's [CA] (+27) rounded out the top five schools on the leaderboard behind the Bears and Aggies.
"This morning was just too many big numbers, too many penalty shots and overall just sloppy play," Higgins added. "Things were a lot better in the afternoon. We're coming on and I feel good about tomorrow. Best thing to come out of today is that we didn't play very well and are still in a position to win the golf tournament."
Individually led by senior Andrew Paysee (+4, t-8th), all five members of the Aggie lineup own spots in the top 25 on the player leaderboard. Josh Gliege, Walker Lee and Chandler Phillips are tied for 14th at seven-over par, followed by Dan Erickson (+9) who shares 25th place.
The Arizona Collegiate will wrap up on Tuesday with the resumption of the suspended second around as well as the final round of the 54-hole event. Live scoring and results can be found on GolfStat.com and as well as live updates via twitter at @AggieMensGolf.
